Some of the photography books like ‘A photographer’s playbook’ help you develop various skills by proposing a range of themes or concepts to work with (the above book has one for each day in the year if I recall correcty). I use the concept loosely: events in my life become a thematic learning ground. Birthday parties, corporate presentations, show jumping competitions: I try to find shots that work, light that makes the photo and so on.
Here is a selection of photos I took at a recent party and my comments on why a photo works:
Leica M246 and Summilux 1:1.4/50 ASPH at f/2 and 1/250 (ISO 1,250)
Light on chrome, bokeh: sets the tone of the event at this brasserie
Leica M246 and Summilux 1:1.4/50 ASPH at f/1.7 and 1/3,000 (ISO 1,250)
A birthday party means cake!

I always try and capture what champagne or wine was served, serves as a memo. Same for the food
Leica M246 and Summilux 1:1.4/50 ASPH at f/2 and 1/250 (ISO 1,250)

I try and take many photos of the person celebrating for two reaosns (1) they will likely be super happy, smiling so a good subject and (2) they are the reason you’re there to record with pictures…
And finally I try and find at least one humerous thing…
